About the Author

Benjamin Bengfort is a Data Scientist who lives inside the beltway but ignores politics (the normal business of DC) favoring technology instead. Be prepared to spend a lot of time debugging their sample code and the installation instructions for the various software packages. Most of the examples in the book do not match the sample code or data provided. And much of what they refer to in the book is not included in the samples. On top of all this, they even manage to mangle their examples just within the book itself. As an example, they walk through a data exercise first using mapreduce. Then they try to do the same thing using spark. But the spark program produces incorrect results. Yes, it works, but it isn't what mapreduce produced, or the book claimed was the expected output.On the plus side, the best way to learn something is by doing and this book will give you plenty of opportunities to figure things out on your own. That's always a plus. But not for the authors.

Good book to start Big Data with.

I really like this book. It is a great overview of a plethora of topics around doing scalable data analytics and data science. It is extremely up-to date, going through techniques that have existed for many years now like MapReduce, but also newer systems like Spark, all in the context of the Hadoop eco-system. They go into machine learning techniques, data management, and overall paint a nice picture around what data science is, and why data products are important, while teaching you how to make them!Every single concept is explained in a clear and concise manner, and wherever details are omitted there is always a citation to a source where the reader can continue reading more about it, which I think is great. Although I wouldn’t classify myself as a beginner, I believe it is friendly to both professionals and beginners, as it is centered around python which makes most examples (that are conveniently uploaded in a nice github repository) really easy to simply run and play around with. After describing something, whether that would be a technique for data analysis, or just the in-and outer workings of some analysis platform like HBase, Hive etc, the authors provide examples so that while you’re reading about this stuff you can also run it, play around with it and really explore how these systems function; I believe this is a crucial part of familiarizing ones’ self with new platforms.Another thing I enjoyed a lot was the ending of this book. After you really dive into all of these systems and get your feet wet with each one of them, the authors wrap it all up in a nice bow by taking a step back and describing the entire end-to-end process of how you would go about productively using the knowledge you’ve gotten from this book to build data analytics workflows!I highly recommend this to anyone who both knows that they want to learn how to deploy scalable analytics workflows in 2016, but also to readers who are simply just curious about data science; this book will suck you in!

This is the most thorough book I have seen on how to brioche knit. The instructions are rich with photos and every aspect of brioche knitting is covered: one-color, two-color, cast-ons and bind-offs, multiple types of increases and decreases, crossing stitches and cables, syncopation, and working in the round. The book also includes a stitch dictionary and several patterns for sweaters, hats, scarves and mitts. If you can only get one book on brioche knitting, this should be it.

Hats off to Nancy Marchant. She has written an excellent book. The directions and illustrations are very clear and easy to follow. There are more pages devoted to brioche stitch techniques than patterns, which is what a book about the brioche stitch needs. The patterns include cardigans, pullovers and vest for men and women,scarves, hats, snoods, and various odd items like boot cuffs, and wristlets. I can't wait to see other people finish some of these items and post better pictures on Ravelry. That is my only gripe with this book... I wish there were more pictures of the finished projects in this book. The pictures are adequate, but not inspiring. Only because I've done brioche patterns before, do I know that in person these projects are probably more amazing than the photo shows.

I am new to this knitting technique -- also left-handed -- so I ordered this book after realizing YouTube instructional videos would not suffice for me. The book is just filled with color photos of every step for both one- and two-colored Brioche knitting and, to my surprise, included a stitch dictionary! I have had to downsize considerably on my knitting books to make room for baby stuff so I am very satisfied that this text includes the theory, stitches, and patterns for all knitter levels. This is a lovely addition to my knitting library and hopefully yours, too!

If you are interested in brioche knitting this is a must have book. I counted 50 distinct stitch patterns and that did not count all the variations you get when you add color. And there are about 30 project patterns for everything from simple scarves to complicated sweaters. It also has very good directions, drawings and pictures help the you learn brioche knitting.My only problem with the book is that I prefer the 'knit one below ' method of knitting brioche and all Marchant's directions use the 'slip yarn over' technique. This means I have to re-chart all of her patterns, but that is a good thing. It helps you really understand the pattern.I also think her instructions overly complicated. You do not need to tell a knitter to move the yarn to the front when doing a purl after a knit. Everyone know that a knit stitch starts and ends with the yarn in back and if the yarn is in the wrong place for the next stitch it gets moved. The knitter should assume "slip one yarn over" always starts with the yarn in the front, crosses over the slipped stitch, and ends with the yarn in back unless told differently. If the stitch before was a knit, and therefor the yarn is in back of the needle, it will be moved to the front to do a s1yo stitch. Directions say "k1, p1" not "k1, yf p1" so why not change "k1, yf s1, yo" to just "k1, s1yo"But neither of my complains above affect the value of this book. It is definitely worth owning.

This is probably the most comprehensive book on Brioche by the undisputed Master, but if you're just learning it's almost too much information. The text was hard for me to read - the type face and page colors didn't work well together. I would have preferred a simpler look to the pages. I'm a fairly advanced knitter but if I were to do this again I think I'd look for a beginning book and move to this one when I was more comfortable with the technique. There are several cast-on styles and several ways to knit up the brioche. It's quite a technical book. I wouldn't recommend it for someone just learning brioche, or for beginning knitters. If you want to learn everything there is to know about brioche - this is your book!

If you are new to Brioche knitting, then this book is a must. It describes the variety of basic stitches and gives tips on how to handle mistakes and shaping. Brioche knitting is different than normal knitting so this book really explains what to do well with beautiful examples of the different stitches as well as patterns. Uses the tried & true Japanese chart symbols. Nancy Marchant is a leader in Brioche knitting. I'm learning so much and the book is well written.

This Brioche knitting system is fascinating and this is an excellent book to introduce you to the fantastic new world. The book contains a history of the Brioche knitting and then explains step by step how to do the different styles. Starting with the basics, you are guided with both diagrams and photographs. Culminating in several projects, with step by step instructions, diagrams, and photographs to assist you with completing your projects successfully. Recommendations are made throughout for success!

The mathematical theory is mature, but continues to give rise to problems of special beauty and difficulty. The emphasis of this book is upon core mathematical material and the presentation of the shortest and most accessible proofs. The book is intended for graduate students and researchers in probability and mathematical physics. Almost no specialist knowledge is assumed beyond undergraduate analysis and probability. This new volume differs substantially from the first edition through the inclusion of much new material, including: the rigorous theory of dynamic and static renormalization; a sketch of the lace expansion and mean field theory; the uniqueness of the infinite cluster; strict inequalities between critical probabilities; several essays on related fields and applications; numerous other results of significant.
