Michael F. McTear Michael McTearMichael McTear is Emeritus Professor at the University of Ulster with a special research interest in spoken language technologies. He graduated in German Language and Literature from Queens University Belfast in 1965, was awarded MA in Linguistics at University of Essex in 1975, and a PhD at the University of Ulster in 1981. He has been Visiting Professor at the University of Hawaii (1986-87), the University of Koblenz, Germany (1994-95), and University of Granada, Spain (2006- 2010). He has been researching in the field of spoken dialogue systems for more than fifteen years and is the author of the widely used textbook Spoken dialogue technology: toward the conversational user interface (Springer, 2004). He also is a co-author (with Kristiina Jokinen) of the book Spoken Dialogue Systems, (Morgan and Claypool, 2010), and (with Zoraida Callejas) of the book Voice Application Development for Android (Packt Publishing, 2013).Zoraida CallejasZoraida Callejas is Associate Professor at the University of Granada, Spain, and member of the CITIC-UGR Research Institute. She graduated in Computer Science in 2005, and was awarded a PhD in 2008, also at the University of Granada. Her research is focused on dialogue systems, especially on affective human-machine conversational interaction, and she has made more than 160 contributions to books, journals and conferences. She has participated in several research projects related to these topics and contributes to scientific committees and societies in the area.  She has been Visiting Professor at the Technical University of Liberec, Czech Republic (2007-13), University of Trento, Italy (2008), University of Ulster, Northern Ireland (2009), Technical University of Berlin, Germany (2010), University of Ulm, Germany (2012, 2014) and ParisTech, France (2013). She is co-author (with Michael McTear) of the book Voice Application Development for Android (Packt Publishing, 2013).David Griol David Griol is Professor at the Department of Computer Science in the Carlos III University of Madrid (Spain). He obtained his Ph.D. degree in Computer Science from the Technical University of Valencia (Spain) in 2007. He also has a B.S. in Telecommunication Science from this University. He has participated in several European and Spanish projects related to natural language processing and conversational interfaces. About the Author

John R. Bowen is a Dunbar-Van Cleve Professor in Arts & Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis, where he teaches Sociocultural Anthropology. His research currently focuses on comparative social studies of Islam across the world, and his ethnographic studies take place in Indonesia, France, and England.

 

Dr. Bowen works with colleagues in several other departments as director of the Pluralism, Politics, and Religion Initiative, which holds regular workshops on questions of religious and political pluralism, and has created a collaborative graduate training program with partner universities in Europe—as of 2009, in Paris, Utrecht, and Göttingen.

These two current overviews of Chinese art take very different approaches. Keeper of the Department of Eastern Art at the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, Tregear offers a chronologically organized work that covers its topic in brief survey form, using representative examples of bronzes, painting, laquerware, ceramics, jade, and stone carving. The book is so brief and the sweep is so broad that a reader not already familiar with the general outline of Chinese history and common Chinese terms may have trouble forming a coherent picture, particularly in regard to the earliest centuries covered. Significantly, Tregear leaves out the important find of a cache of figures at Shanxingdui in 1986, which has been of enormous importance in broadening the known range of cultures in ancient China. On the other hand, she provides an excellent section on 20th-century Chinese art, an area neglected by many of the standard histories. Clunas's (history of art, Univ. of Sussex) approach, by contrast, involves a more critical, theoretical inquiry into Western notions of Chinese art. He eschews a chronological arrangement in favor of thematic chapters on art at court, in the tomb, in the temple, in the life of the elite, and in the marketplace. He makes a point of including objects that have been considered masterpieces intermixed with other less well-known works. He is concerned throughout his text with issues of the historical place of art in Chinese society and with how that society evaluated various objects. The finds at Shanxingdui are mentioned, and some attention is paid to 20th-century work, though not as much in Tregear's survey. Both of these titles have merits as overviews of Chinese art and both could be used by students as well as interested lay readers.
