This book analyzes the Islamization of the Javanese, the largest ethnic group in Indonesia, which is the nation with the largest Muslim population in the world. The greatest of these identities were reconciled in the early seventeenth century by the greatest of Java's kings, Sultan Agung. But his successors were less comfortable with this reconciliation and thus found themselves opposed by committed Muslims. These successor kings turned to the Dutch East India Company for support, alliance with Christians further feeding rebellion. Not until a century after Agung died was Islam and the court aristocracy - the epitome of what it meant to be Javanese - again reconciled.

The result was a society deeply committed to Islam, observant of its ritual life, but admitting indigenous, non-Islamic, spiritual forces to the faith. This, after 400 years, is the "mystic synthesis" of this book's title.

Mobilizing Javanese, Dutch, and other sources, Professor Ricklefs presents a book that should be read by anyone interested in the history of Islam, of Indonesia, or, as he puts it - of "societies that move across what we think of as boundaries" - for they take us closer to the question of what we are as human beings.

The vision of Intercessors Arise International is to see a multitude of intercessors from every nation released in strategic prayer for the furtherance of the Gospel worldwide. Debbie’s passion is to see intercessors at work stirring the nations and setting captives free throughout the world by the ministry of prayer. Debbie also serves on the staff of the International House of Prayer in Kansas City (IHOPKC). About the Author
Rigdzin Shikpo has spent more than fifty years studying and practicing Buddhism. When he met his principal teacher, Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche, in 1965, he had already trained with several Theravadan monks over the course of nine years and was closely associated with the Buddhist Society in London. He is the Dharma director of the Longchen Foundation, a community of Buddhist teachers and students practicing meditation in the Mahayana and Dzogchen traditions of Buddhism.

Francesca Fremantle is a scholar and translator of Sanskrit and Tibetan works of Hindu and Buddhist tantra, and was a student of Chogyam Trungpa for many years. Fremantle received her doctorate from the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. She is a teacher with the Longchen Foundation, established by Chogyam Trungpa and Dilgo Khyentse, and directed by Rigdzin Shikpo. She currently lives in London.
